Types of marking essays
Some faculty members give an automatic failing grade for the assignment or for the course, according to their own course policy. In many cases, I've found it effective to let students investigate topics themselves rather than me delivering lectures.
Remain fresh and alert by taking breaks when needed. What is dreaded depends on the person, and might be paperwork filing, housework, gardening, tax returns or practising the violin.

Essay marking scheme
For marking purposes, this assignment was delightful. This is another reason for pacing: marking gradually becomes easier. What does the tutor expect students to gain from the task and from the process of assessment and feedback? Two examples of this are: 1 a well focused essay showing a competent understanding but with few references ; 2 An essay that consists largely of quotations however well referenced. Marking requires mental effort, and the mind behaves like a muscle. Tutors should not expect to see and mark everything a student writes: over-marking can be bad for the student as well as for the tutor. You can find examples of standard editing marks in many writing guides, such as the Random House Handbook. The lowest marks in the upper second range 8 and 7 : Clear uppers 8 and 7 will have all the qualities of thirds and lower seconds, plus a clear argument which is well supported in the body of the essay by very tight referencing to the required sources. There are several reasons for this. I say in my feedback that if my specific comments don't say anything about a particular aspect of the assignment, then the student should look to the general comments. Work in moderation, a little bit each day, rather than procrastinating and bingeing. Use final or end comments to discuss more global issues e.
For example, in one class students had to write eight mini-essays, one per week. All points of the question would be fully dealt with. It can be particularly beneficial if the criteria, and the scheme of assessment, apply to each FL taught in the institution.
When the assignment is interesting to both students and the teacher, it is a win-win solution. Students who don't ask just receive a mark.
